‘覺堂’(각당) 생각의 집

기억의 켜를 품고, 도시와 공동체를 잇는 집

서울의 오래된 주거지인 신문로2가에 자리한 이 프로젝트는 한 가족의 기억에서 시작되었다. 건축주는 어린 시절 아버지가 지은 집에서 오랜 시간을 보냈고, 세월이 흐른 뒤 같은 자리에 가족의 삶과 사회적 나눔이 공존하는 새로운 공간을 세웠다. 따라서 이 건축은 과거를 지우고 다시 시작하는 신축이 아니라, 한 장소에 축적된 기억을 오늘의 삶에 맞게 재구성하는 작업이다.

기존 주택의 벽돌과 석재, 마루재와 계단재는 철거 과정에서 조심스럽게 해체·보관한 뒤 새 건축물 곳곳에 다시 사용했다. 오래된 재료는 이전 집의 흔적과 시간을 새로운 공간으로 이어주는 매개가 된다. 과거의 기억은 형태의 재현이 아닌, 재료의 질감과 사용의 흔적을 통해 현재의 건축 안에 자연스럽게 스며든다.

건물에는 가족의 주거를 비롯해 복지, 강연, 연구, 모임을 위한 공간이 함께 배치되어 있다. 사적인 일상과 공익적 활동은 각자의 영역을 유지하면서도 유기적으로 관계를 맺는다. 이를 통해 개인의 집은 가족만을 위한 닫힌 공간에 머물지 않고, 이웃과 방문자, 도시 공동체를 연결하는 열린 플랫폼으로 확장된다.

여러 층에 마련된 정원은 수직으로 쌓인 다양한 프로그램 사이를 연결하고, 건물의 복합적인 밀도를 부드럽게 조율한다. 가족에게는 집의 정서와 휴식을 회복하는 장소가 되고, 방문자에게는 만남과 교류를 위한 완충 공간이 되며, 도시에는 작은 녹색의 틈을 제공한다. 정원과 동선, 오래된 재료와 새로운 공간은 서로 맞물리며 하나의 입체적인 생활 생태계를 이룬다.

신문로 프로젝트는 한국 건축의 고유성을 전통적 형식의 반복이 아닌, 삶의 기억과 도시의 맥락을 새롭게 조립하는 과정에서 찾는다. 기억을 지우지 않고 다시 사용하며, 사적인 삶을 공동체를 향해 열어 보이는 이 집은 서울의 복합적인 도시 풍경 속에서 주거가 사회적 관계와 나눔의 장소로 진화할 수 있음을 보여준다.

‘覺堂’ (Gakdang), House of Thought

A House That Holds Layers of Memory and Connects the City with Community

Located in Sinmunno 2-ga, one of Seoul’s long-established residential neighborhoods, this project began with the memories of a family. The client spent much of his childhood in a house built by his father, and years later, on the same site, created a new place where family life and social contribution could coexist. Rather than erasing the past and starting anew, the project reinterprets the memories accumulated on the site in response to contemporary life.

Bricks, stone, wooden flooring, and stair materials from the original house were carefully dismantled and preserved during demolition, then reused throughout the new building. These aged materials serve as vessels that carry traces of the former house and the passage of time into the new architecture. Memory is not reproduced through form, but is allowed to permeate the present through the textures of materials and the marks left by years of use.

The building brings together the family residence with spaces for welfare activities, lectures, research, and gatherings. Private daily life and public-interest programs maintain their own distinct territories while remaining organically connected. In this way, the private home expands beyond an enclosed space for the family alone, becoming an open platform that connects neighbors, visitors, and the wider urban community.

Gardens distributed across multiple levels link the diverse programs stacked vertically throughout the building and gently mediate its complex density. For the family, they restore the sense of comfort and repose associated with home; for visitors, they provide transitional spaces for encounter and exchange; and for the city, they offer small pockets of greenery. Gardens and circulation, old materials and new spaces intertwine to form a three-dimensional ecosystem of everyday life.

The Sinmunno Project seeks a distinctively Korean architectural identity not through the repetition of traditional forms, but through the renewed assembly of lived memories and the urban context. By preserving and reusing memories rather than erasing them, and by opening private life toward the community, the house demonstrates how residential architecture can evolve into a place of social connection, exchange, and sharing within Seoul’s complex urban landscape.
